Le Château De La Motte – Places to explore

Le Château de la Motte sits at the end of a long tree-lined avenue in the commune of Joué-du-plain, in Orne, Lower Normandy. All around us is rich rolling farmland, with picturesque villages dotted here & there. Heading north the landscape shifts into the rocky climbs of the Suisse Normande (home to the formidable Chateau of Falaise, where William The Conquerer was born) before continuing to Calvados (home of the finest ciders and brandies) and the Pays d’Auge (home of Camembert, Livarot, and other world famous cheeses), to Lisieux (home of Saint Thérèse), and Bayeux (home of the famous tapestry), and on to the north Normandy coast with its historically significant beaches. South takes you into the enormous forests of the Normandie-Maine natural park, towards vibrant Alençon, and such pretty little places as Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei (voted one of the ten most beautiful villages in France), the hilltop towns of Domfront and Carrouges, and the spas and pleasure gardens of Bagnoles-de-l’Orne. East takes you through the horse-filled plains of the Perche, on to Chartres, and of course to Paris; while west goes through the beautiful Vire valley en route to the awesome Mont Saint Michel, and beyond it all to Brittany.

There is so much to explore: numerous gorgeous towns and villages, a wealth of historic locations, many awe-inspiring churches and cathedrals, a sprinkling of ancient châteaux and elegant gardens, various little-known standing stones and megalithic monuments, plenty of places of natural wonder and beauty – and of course the cities: filled with culture and cafes, museums and galleries, restaurants and shops…

There is so much to enjoy! Food is a major attraction – and not only cheese and booze! – the food here in general is amazing, with fresh, local produce being the rule rather than the exception. It’s a paradise for nature lovers – from fishing and hunting, to walking, cycling, swimming, rock-climbing, horse-riding, and just about every other outdoor pursuit you can imagine – Normandy has the lot. There is a wide range of different walks in the area, from light strolls to epic treks, and the countryside and forests are always ready to reward the curious. People who love horses are also in for a treat! We are just around the corner from the Perche – home of the mighty Percheron horse, an awesome creature whom everyone should have the experience of being near at least once! The national stud farm, Haras du Pin, is only a half hour drive away, and here you can view the cream of the horsey crop in their elegant surrounds, and attend all kinds of equestrian events.

We are approximately a one hour drive from the port at Ouistreham (Caen), or around a two hour drive from either Cherbourg or Le Havre. Our closest train station is Écouché, 2.5 miles away, and there is another one in Argentan, 7 miles away. Drop-offs and collections can be arranged. (By the way: Écouché is a great little place, perched prettily upon the river Orne, with lots of lovely little lanes and some fascinating monuments and beautiful architecture to be seen. You can get everything you need there: it has excellent bakeries, grocers, general stores, bar/tabacs, florists, hairdressers, restaurants, etc… Also a very good vet’s surgery!)

We look forward to welcoming you,
and helping you to enjoy the area however we can,
happy holidays are here!
